Extra-Curricular Programs
Athletics
In our mission to develop the whole-child, St. Mary’s provides opportunities for physical, social, and emotional growth through an inclusive, extra-curricular sports program. Age-appropriate, quality programming is provided by staff volunteer coaches who understand and use Canada Sport for Life’s Long-Term Athletic Development model as a framework for training.
For more information about our athletics program, see SAINTS Athletics Program.
Choir
St. Mary's is pleased to offer two extra-curricular choir programs to our students. Our Primary Choir meets weekly for students in grades 1-3. This choir performs at least twice per year. The Intermediate Choir meets weekly for students in grades 4-7. This choir performs multiple times per year. In addition to singing for our monthly school Masses, the choir sings for several Christmas events in our community, Christmas Musicals, sacraments during the spring (First Communion and Confirmation), Ash Wednesday Mass for the Parish, the Regional Fine Arts Festival, the STMC Chancellor Music Festival, and Spring Concert.
Readers Are Leaders
Readers Are Leaders is a club that is meant to promote the love of reading and provide an opportunity for students who have the gift of remembering details to shine. Each year six books are chosen by the teacher librarians of the CISVA from the Red Cedar Awards nominations list for students to read and know. Students are able to make their own teams of six or seven students to compete. There are three levels of competition that students must win access to: the school in house; the zonal competition with up to five other schools; and the CISVA championships.
Spelling Bee
St. Mary’s participates in the CISVA Spelling Bee competition. It is open to students from grades 4 to 7. Once the words have been assigned, a preliminary Written Bee is given. From there the top three students from each grade participate in an in house Oral Bee in front of their peers. The winner of the Oral Bee is then sent to represent St. Mary’s at the CISVA Spelling Bee.
Student Council
St. Mary’s offers a Student Council program and its aim is to provide the students with knowledge on their respective roles and responsibilities within the council, to nurture leadership skills and to prepare them spiritually, mentally and physically in facing the challenges and obstacles in order to promote community leadership in the future.
The Student Council is comprised of 4 Executive Members: Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Treasurer and Secretary; and 2 Class Representatives from each grade one through 7. Elections for the executive positions are held in the spring and for class representatives in the fall.
Student Council members demonstrate positive leadership and are elected to represent the student body, attend Student Council meetings, lead prayer at lunchtime and at monthly assemblies, and organize student-led fundraisers and Out-of-Uniform Days for the community of St. Mary’s.
